Today was tough..... We only had about 55 miles to go but we were fatigued, had along sustained climb and had a headwind the final 25 miles into our rest town with an uphill finish. To top it off we had a destroyed tired at mile 12 and two flats....
Other than that the day was great!
We got a great pack up at the KOA with the exception that some one stole one of the hitch pins for our stabilizer bar. I mean, who steals this stuff. We are now tempted to leave out a bucket of free pins for people to take. This has now happened three times in our camping career and each time is annoying. We have back ups but none as good as the one we had. The friendly owner at the KOA helped us out with a nice replacement... some peoples kids...
We picked up some breakfast at McDonalds and made our way back to our stopping point from the day before. After getting unloaded we were off to an uneventful start of the ride. As mentioned above I hit a piece of glass around mile 11 and sliced my tire open and my tire also popped. We had to walk about a mile and a half to a gas station where Rebecca would meet us with new supplies. Thank you SOOO much to Rebecca for the support. This created an extra two hours of driving for her and she had to do a similar thing the day before due to the storm...She is really going above and beyond to make this dream real.
From there we started a 12 mile up hill grind to a small summit. When we crested we were greeted by a mild persistent head wind that forced us to peddle down hill the rest of way into town until an uphill grind to the campground.
Cedar City is great and I truly enjoyed the day off today!! Rebecca will write more about this. A very special thanks to both Andrew and Rebecca for their moral and actual support during this ride so far. It is hard to imagine that I am already about 700 and some miles in and almost 20% done!
One other very awesome side note. This trip started at some level back in 2008 when I had planned to cross the country on bike. Instead I went to Taiwan and we later had many life events that delayed this. However, the original trip was going to be a fundraiser for MS. While the fundraising component has gone away for this trip much of our route is based on a cross country route that the MS Society takes every year on a cross country trek. Today we arrived at the same KOA that the MS trip is at. They are almost done with their journey, crossing the other way, but it is interesting to meet them on the route knowing there are so many connections.
Part of the MS bike tour? Congrats for keeping Dad in your thaoughts and supporting those who can't ride. the trip is inspirational!! Are you going through the midwest, or taking the southern route? I'll be watching...
